Some individuals when they enter their college years are just natural learners. They can study with ease and have no problems achieving their goals. For the rest of students in college they are not as fortunate and have to work hard to achieve their academic goals. When individuals get their undergraduate degrees and go on to a PhD, even the most natural born learners can struggle.
Successful PhD students do just float through the years spent pursuing their doctorate. They have to work hard. Some of the things they do to achieve success may be common knowledge whereas others are not so obvious to everyone. The following are eight secrets implemented by successful PhD students.
- Accept Failure
No matter how hard you may work, sometimes you will not do as well as you had hoped. Sometimes you will struggle and fail. Do not let failure discourage you from continue to pursue your dreams and educational pursuits. Accept that not everything you do will be perfect.
- Be Confident
Be confident in yourself and your abilities. This goes hand in hand with accepting your failures. Know that you can achieve your goals and that you will because you know what is expected of you. Do not allow roadblocks along the way cause you to doubt your ability to complete the required work.
- Work Hard
If you want anything, you have to accept that it is going to take a lot of work. More often than not, it is going to take a lot of hard work and PhD students are fully aware of this fact. Once you accept that you are going to have to do a lot of hard work you will be better apt to tackle it head on.
- Establish Goals
Do not overwhelm yourself by only having one main deadline. Establish small goals for yourself that you can achieve. All of your small goals should lead up to the larger goals you need and want to achieve. With each achievement celebrate or reward yourself in some way, nothing major, perhaps an evening off research or writing. Perhaps a power nap, whatever benefits you most.
- Find Your Passion
Find what your passion is when it comes to your educational goals. Pursue the experience and all of the knowledge that you gain in your educational endeavors. Do not define yourself by getting straight A’s or all high scores. Education is about far more than letter grades and scores.
- Be Persistent
Persistence is important for PhD students and life in general. When you stumble, fail, or falter pick yourself up and push yourself through it. Do not allow small details distract you from achieving your ultimate goals.
- Keep Consistent Hours
When students are given the task of setting their own study and research hours with no true structure, it can make things difficult. As a PhD student, establish consistent work hours. Treat your time spent on research like a job and do your work the same hours daily. By treating it like a job, you will get into a routine and it will help keep you focused on your goals.
- Seek Out Help
No matter how smart you are and no matter how competent and self-motivated you are, sometimes you need help. Do not be afraid to reach out to others and ask for help when you find yourself stalled or stuck on something. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but it is a sign of strength and intelligence.
Follow the tips above in all of your educational pursuits, and even apply some into your life after completion of school to have a fulfilling and successful life.
